Ubuntu Linux and LOUD

How do I launch a LOUD VM in Statler College & LCSEE facilities?

Introduction

As of the Fall semester of 2018, 137 AER will no longer dual boot Windows 10 and LOUD (LCSEE Optimized Ubuntu Distribution). Instead, 137 AER will be installed with Windows 10 and Virutalbox.

These instructions apply to any Statler College computing facility that is outfitted with our LOUD VM.

A LOUD OVA (Open Virtual Appliance) will be cached on the machines' hard drives to easily start a clean LOUD virtual machine.

Video Tutorial for Launching a LOUD VM

Importing the OVA

  1. Open Windows Explorer (Folder icon in the bottom task bar).
  2. Navigate to C:\LOUD\ by doing the following:
    1. Select Local Disk (C:) in the left hand side bar.
    2. Double-click on LOUD in the main pane.
  3. Double-click on GOLD_LOUD_16.04.ova.
  4. Select Import.
  5. Double click on GOLD OVA in the left pane of VirtualBox to start the VM.

Clean-up

Once you've finished using your LOUD VM, please be a good citizen and clean up your work to avoid access to your files and to maintain disk space by doing the following:
  1. Shut Down your LOUD VM.
  2. Right-click on the LOUD VM in the VirtualBox GUI and select Remove.
  3. Choose Delete All Files.

Advanced

One of the advantages of using LOUD as a VM is it allows every student to have full root privileges to the VM for development purposes. Below are the root credentials to the VM.
